Understanding Dot Matrix Window Fitment for Tint Templates

One of the most common questions we receive involves rear window tint templates appearing “too small” when compared to the outer edge of the glass. In most cases, this is completely normal and is related to the vehicle’s dot matrix border design. What Is a Dot Matrix Border? What Is a Dot Matrix Border?

Many rear windows include a black dotted ceramic border around the edge of the glass. This area is called the dot matrix or ceramic frit. It helps with adhesion, UV protection, and appearance from the factory.

On many vehicles the actual visible glass extends beyond this matrix border.

Why the Template Looks Smaller

Window tint film is designed to fit the inside install area of the glass, following the dot matrix border, not the full outer edge of the window.

During installation:

  • Film is usually heat shrunk and test-fitted on the outside of the window.

  • However, the tint is ultimately installed on the inside of the glass.

  • Because of this, templates are intentionally designed to align with the usable install area inside the matrix border.

This means the template may appear slightly smaller if you compare it directly to the full outer dimensions of the glass.

Correct vs Incorrect Fitment

Correct Fitment

A proper template fit:

  • Aligns with the inside matrix border

  • Leaves a clean finished edge

  • Prevents peeling and light gaps

  • Matches the actual install area

Incorrect Fitment

If a template is cut to the full outer edge of the glass:

  • The film may overlap onto the ceramic frit area

  • Edges may not lay correctly

  • Light gaps and adhesion problems can occur

  • Final appearance may be inconsistent

Important Installation Note

The dot matrix border should always be considered when checking template sizing. On many rear windows, especially slider and truck rear glass, the template is intentionally sized to fit the inside visible install area rather than the outer glass perimeter.

If you are unsure whether your template is fitting correctly:

  • Verify the exact vehicle model and trim

  • Compare fitment from the inside install perspective

  • Check alignment against the dot matrix border rather than the outer edge of the glass
